Tyres are one of the most important safety items on a car, but once fitted, are usually forgotten by the average UK motorist.
In this presentation, Peter Snelling, Head of Communications will highlight not only the road safety implications of this apathy, but also the huge monetary and environmental cost to both the individual and society of not checking your tyres.
New evidence from the 2007 ‘Fill Up With Air’ roadshows, which checked over 2300 vehicles across the UK this summer, will reveal the scale of the problem.
Peter will also speak about Michelin’s latest developments to both further improve the safety of tyres and lessen their environmental impact and its full support for the DfT and DEFRA’s Think! and Act on CO2 campaigns and the new TyreSafe initiatives to make the public much more tyre aware.

The Passive Revolution Ltd doesn’t make or supply anything!
But it does organise seminars and exhibitions around the UK, entitled “Designing safer roadsides”. These events encourage a greater understanding in the design and use of “crash friendly” roadside furniture. We all know that signs, lighting columns, traffic signals and VMS play an important part in road safety, but their presence by the side of the road can also constitute a road safety hazard in the event that an errant vehicle strikes them at speed. Where it is not always possible to adequately protect these items by the use of restraint systems, the use of “crash friendly” supports can help to avoid unnecessary death or serious injury.
In addition, The Passive Revolution operates an independent website: www.thepassiverevolution.com This site provides a wealth of information, advice and guidance on this subject. The company also organises crash demonstrations that graphically show the very real dangers that exist to vehicle occupants through colliding with steel posts and other unforgiving items. Video footage of some of these demonstrations will be on exhibit, and you will be offered the chance to attend future events to witness the work carried out, and discover for yourself how important “crash friendly” products are in the bid to reduce the number of killed and seriously injured casualties in the UK.

Wheels is a revolutionary and unique employee benefits portfolio provided by the IAM (Institute of Advanced Motorists) the UK’s leading road safety charity. The scheme aims to help employees, their families and their friends develop the skills that will make them safer road users while enabling them to get more from their car, motorcycle, or bicycle – and reducing their impact on the environment.
In addition, everyone participating in the Wheels scheme automatically becomes an Associate of the IAM, and can share the advantages of IAM membership. These include savings on a wide range of travel and financial services, and many other benefits.
It’s this unique mix of personal safety skills development and other carefully selected benefits that makes the Wheels scheme so attractive to employees and employers.
Embracing drivers, motorcyclists and cyclists, Wheels is a compelling proposition. A proposition, we believe, only the IAM can deliver.
